Who We Are

Math for America San Diego provides highly trained, exemplary math teachers dedicated to improving mathematics achievement in secondary schools throughout San Diego County.

MƒA SD achieves this mission by:

  • Improving retention of mathematics teachers in high-need and urban secondary schools;
  • Improving the quality of mathematics teaching by enhancing content knowledge and pedagogical skills; and
  • Improving student learning and achievement in mathematics.

MƒA SD is a consortium of three partner universities: California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM), San Diego State University (SDSU) and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD); and four local school districts: Escondido Union High School District, Grossmont Union High School District, Oceanside Unified High School District and San Diego Unified School District.

The MƒA SD Fellowship receives funding from the National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship Program and local private funding.

MƒA Fellowship

The MƒA SD Fellowship is a five-year program for mathematically accomplished individuals who are new to teaching. Fellowship recipients are comprised of recent college graduates and mid-career professionals committed to teaching math in public, high need secondary schools.

How the Program Works
Year One: Prepare to become a public secondary school math teacher.

Years Two through Five: Teach in one of MƒA SD’s partner school districts.

  • $60,000 in stipends over four years, in addition to San Diego’s competitive teaching salary
  • Individualized support of a mentor teacher
  • Extensive professional development opportunities and participation in MƒA SD corps activities
  • Job placement assistance

Professional Development
MƒA SD Fellows begin their teaching career supported by an experienced, specially trained MƒA SD Mentor. These Mentors provide personal support, one-on-one mentoring, coaching and guidance to Fellows. MƒA SD Fellows participate in a range of professional development opportunities during the five year program including summer institutes, community service programs, academic year seminars and participation in professional communities at the local, state and national levels.
