Who We Are
Math for America was founded in New York City in 2004 with a mission to improve mathematics education in US public secondary schools by recruiting, training and retaining outstanding mathematics teachers. The MƒA NY office offers the MƒA Fellowship, MƒA Early Career Fellowship and MƒA Master Teacher Fellowship. MƒA NY works with our partners Bard College, New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and Teachers College, Columbia University.

The MƒA NY Fellowships were the congressional model for legislation creating the National Science Foundation Teaching and Master Teacher Fellowships through the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program in the America COMPETES Act. MƒA NY’s mission is to improve math education in secondary public schools by recruiting, training, and retaining outstanding mathematics teachers.

Professional Development

MƒA NY has New Teacher Advisors for the MƒA Fellowship and MƒA Early Career Fellowship. These Advisors mentor Fellows during their first two years of teaching in the program, visiting them on a regular basis in their classrooms and offering instructional support. MƒA NY has a Professional Development and Outreach (PDO) group, created in partnership with the IAS/Park City Math Institute (PCMI), to support mathematics teachers through workshops and outreach activities. By hosting a variety of workshops, seminars and events, MƒA NY keeps our teachers connected to one another and helps them learn new skills and strategies. In addition, MƒA NY encourages our teachers to lead professional development sessions and attend and present at local and national conferences.
